# Chat Locks

Put a 4-digit code on a chat or channel so nobody can open it on your unlocked phone.

Lend someone your phone without worrying about that one conversation. A lock puts a 4-digit code on a chat.

## Lock a chat

To take it off, choose **Remove lock** in the same place.

## When it locks again

- When you leave the chat (after a 30-second grace period).

- When mssgs has been in the background for more than 30 seconds.

Locks on DMs follow you to your other devices. Locks on community channels stay on the device where you set them.

## Forgot the code?

The lock screen offers **Forgot your code? Leave conversation**. That removes you from the chat, so choose a code you will remember.

- **Archive**: lock your archived chats with Face ID or a code.
