mssgs reaches 1,000 members after nine months in which growth rose every single month

mssgs, the independent Dutch group chat app, has 1,000 registered members. The counter passed that mark at the end of August 2026, nine months after the first members signed up in December 2025.

Growth rose in every one of those nine months. December brought in 18 new members, June 143, July 213 and August 345. That last month on its own brought in more members than the first six combined, which together came to 299.

mssgs carries no advertising, does not record who a member talks to, and is entirely self-funded. No advertising budget went into the growth.

Nine months, each one bigger than the last

A thousand is not a large number in the messaging business, and the company is not presenting it as one. What mssgs points at is the shape of the line underneath it: nine months in a row in which each month brought in more new members than the one before, with no campaign to explain it.

The app grows by the group rather than by the person. Somebody who installs mssgs arrives to be part of something: a group of friends, a community around a game, a team. That makes the intake lumpy, and according to the company it also explains why the months push each other along. Every community that settles in brings the next one with it.

Grown without advertising, and paid for by the people using it

mssgs has no advertising, no tracking and no resale of member data, and that choice applies to its own growth as well: nothing was paid for installs. New members arrive through an invite link from somebody already there.

The app is paid for by the members who buy something. Credits are a one-off currency that pays for a Premium account, a bot account or a gift to another member, and together with Premium they are the entire business model. A member who never buys anything keeps the whole app: channels, direct messages, voice and video calls, the built-in games, file sharing and the map.

All data is hosted in the European Union. mssgs is available on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux and in the browser, and alongside the app there is a developer side with bots, webhooks, a game SDK and AI integrations over MCP.

A thousand is a small number and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What I do take from it is that every month was bigger than the one before, while we spent nothing on advertising and the app keeps no record of who talks to whom. That means people are bringing each other along. It is the only growth we want, and the only kind that suits an app you use rather than watch.
