X (Twitter) alternative

The European alternativeto X (Twitter)

A public feed of posts, photos, replies and reposts, open to anyone. Without ads, without your posts training AI, and with your data in the EU.

In short

mssgs as an X (Twitter) alternative

mssgs is a European alternative to X (Twitter) with a public feed: posts of up to 500 characters, photos and videos, replies, reposts, quotes, likes, #hashtags and @mentions. Nobody follows anybody, so a post goes to everyone and you never have to build an audience first. The difference: mssgs has no ads, is made by a Dutch company, stores your data in the EU with a Dutch hosting provider and never uses your posts to train AI. Anyone can read the feed without an account, and developers read it for free through a public API, RSS and embeds. mssgs is a chat app too, with communities, voice channels and games. If you are on X for the people you follow there, X still has far more of them.

mssgs vs X

X and mssgs, side by side

A public timeline on both, a very different company behind it. Green marks the side that is ahead on that row, and we say so when that is X.

Why people switch

Why people look for an alternative to X

The reasons we hear most often, and what mssgs does differently.

Ads, unless you pay

X

Free accounts see ads in their timelines, in replies and on profiles, picked with data from X and its ad partners. Premium halves the ads in your timelines, and only Premium+ takes them out of most places.

mssgs

No ads and no tracking, anywhere. mssgs is paid for by optional Premium and credits, and the feed is free for everyone.

Your posts train Grok

X

X's terms let it use your posts to train its AI models, and it may share your public posts and your chats with Grok with xAI to train Grok. You can switch that off in your settings, but it is on until you do.

mssgs

Your posts, photos and messages are never used to train AI, so there is no setting to look for.

Data in the United States

X

X Corp. in Texas has been part of SpaceX since February 2026. X stores data with data centres and cloud providers around the world, sends European users' data to the United States and may share it within its group.

mssgs

mssgs is made in the Netherlands. The servers it runs on are hosted with BIT in Ede, no American cloud. See security.

Reach and a checkmark for sale

X

The For You timeline is picked by a model built on Grok, and paying subscribers get a blue checkmark and their replies shown higher. In December 2025 the European Commission fined X €120 million under the Digital Services Act, partly because that paid checkmark misleads people. X has appealed.

mssgs

No follows and no reach for sale: a post goes to everyone, Premium or not. Reports go to volunteer mssgs community moderators, who vote.

An API you pay for

X

X's API is pay per use: reading a post costs $0.005, posting one $0.015, and a post with a link $0.20.

mssgs

Read the mssgs feed for free, without a key: JSON, RSS, embeds and new posts live over a WebSocket. See the API docs.

No app for your computer

X

X has apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. The Mac app went in 2024, and since December 2025 the iPad app can no longer be installed on a Mac: on a computer, you use x.com.

mssgs

mssgs has apps for Windows, macOS and Linux next to iPhone, Android and the web, and on a computer the feed can open in a window of its own.

To be fair

What X still does better

mssgs is not a copy of X, and there are things X does that mssgs does not. Better you know before you move your posts.

  • Reach. Far more people post on X, among them journalists, politicians, companies and public bodies.
  • Community Notes, where readers add context under posts that mislead.
  • Lists, bookmarks and polls, to follow a topic your own way.
  • Long posts and long videos, up to 25,000 characters with Premium.
  • Spaces, live audio rooms right in the timeline.

Stay with X if

  • the people you follow are not going anywhere
  • you rely on Community Notes, Lists or Spaces
  • you post long articles or long videos

Choose mssgs if

  • you want a feed without ads
  • you want your posts never used to train AI
  • you want your data in Europe, with a European company
  • you want a feed anyone can read and build on without paying for an API

X (Twitter) alternative: frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to X (Twitter)?

It depends on what you use X for. For a public feed of posts, photos and replies without ads, with your data in Europe and never used to train AI, mssgs is a good fit, and it is a chat app with communities and games as well. If you are on X mainly to follow public figures and the news, X still has far more of them.

Is there a European alternative to X?

Yes. mssgs is built by RUAL, a Dutch software company founded in 2009, falls under Dutch law and stores your data in the EU: the servers it runs on are hosted with BIT in Ede. It has no ads and never uses your posts to train AI.

How does the mssgs feed work?

Nobody follows anybody: a post goes to everyone, and the feed learns what you care about from what you like, reply to and open. You post photos, videos and posts of up to 500 characters, and you reply, repost, quote and like, with #hashtags and @mentions. A post carries your city only if you attach it, never the exact spot.

Can people read my posts without an account?

Yes. The feed on feed.mss.gs, every post's own page, the embeds, RSS and the public API are open to everyone. To post, like or reply, people use the mssgs app.

Does mssgs use my posts to train AI?

No. Your posts, photos and messages are never used to train AI, so there is no setting to switch off.

How are posts moderated?

A text post goes live at once, unless it needs a check first. Photos and videos are checked before they go live. Reports go to volunteer mssgs community moderators, who vote, and mssgs staff decide alone only when it is urgent or the law requires it.

Is mssgs free, and does it have ads?

mssgs is free and has no ads: not in the feed and not in your chats. Premium is optional, paid with credits, and never renews by itself.

Post your first one

Free to start, no credit card. Your posts, your data in Europe, no ads.
